It is rare for a photographer to be this candid about his own sexual preferences. McBride’s portraits of teenagers and young people, many of them nude, are available in a new book, Show Me!, published by Steidl, and in a privately printed book sold to institutions and libraries around the world, which includes some of McBride’s personal favorites.
When McBride left Life in 1968, he continued to work as a photographer. In 1974, he began making portraits of young children and their parents. He turned away from portraits of teenagers and began photographing children with naked parents in provocative positions. Show Me! appeared the following year in German. It was translated into English and was a best-seller.
McBride died January 30, 2004. The New Yorker calls him the most famous photographer in the world. McBride worked in black and white, making prints for him and his publisher, Gimbels in New York. He never signed a contract, and often left his prints with the printer.
The Helmut Newton exhibition marked the first major retrospective in the United States of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. Newton took to the streets and nightclubs of Europe and America to capture the beauty and brutality of his subject. His personal studio was in his native Berlin, where he worked until he died on May 28, 2009. Helmut Newton’s work has inspired photographers from Andy Warhol and Jean-Paul Goude to Patrick Demarchelier and Mario Testino. His photography is distinguished by its raw, elemental quality, and he is renowned for his use of large-format photographic printing. His photographs have appeared on the covers of numerous books, including some of the most important photographic volumes of all time, The Family of Man and Femme (Taschen, 1976), and The Secret of Helmut Newton (Taschen, 1989). In 2005, a number of his photographs were shown at the Thomas Dane Gallery in London as part of an exhibition titled At the End of the World (organized by the Portrait Gallery in London).
Peter McBride, the author of the 1997 study of McBride’s work, observed that children and young adults “who, in the free society, are supposedly allowed to ‘express themselves,’ perform lives that are physically acting out fantasies of submission and self-sacrifice.” In order to do this, McBride had to create an audience, and, once he had done this, he was free to make photographs of the subject.
Formalist & Postmodern American photographer, Will McBride (born 1931 St. Louis Missouri), graduated from Syracuse University in 1953 (BA 1958) went to the Army 1955-1957 and served in West Germany from 1957 to 1959.
McBride’s work Fies… (1972) contrasts strongly with that of the previous work of the photographers of the naturist movement. The former use of the landscape, directly linked with the human body, is now replaced by a landscape that appears in the work of the American photographer, quite different in its style. In many ways McBride is a spiritual successor to Helmut Newton. He uses numerous flattened perspective, many shapes, too often anonymous women, and a whole series of colorless, craggy “mountains.”
In the 1950s, Will McBride and other photographers of naturism provided a contrast to the protest photographers of that time, e.g. Helmut Newton and Robert Capa. The agency was the light-hearted, bawdy picture, and they were often called “homosexual photographers”. Such images were perceived as the highest of form and suffered from very few artistic critics. But this always meant that the photographers were hired to record important events.
