warband’s multiplayer has a startlingly low barrier to entry–at the initial character creation screen, you can simply press the ‘play’ button to create your character. unlike other games, where you spend 15 to 30 minutes in character creation, warband allows you to jump straight into character creation and test out your various statistics at a slightly slower pace. this player-friendly trait helped us feel at home in the pvp world right away, because it meant that we didn’t have to blow a whole stack of cash on all the available character customization options. if you’re a melee-oriented player, you’ll want to play as a berserker, whereas archers could benefit from playing as riggors. (as far as pvp goes, a key thing to keep in mind is that each area has very different demands on resource allocation–a simple, three-story castle is definitely not the same as a complex, five-story fortress.) when it came to class selection, we initially played as a berserker with our norseman archer norn, but the third time we created a character, we opted to play as a spearsman with our archer norn, and we’ve been playing as that character ever since.
all told, warband is a more challenging, more meaty online experience than other online games on the market right now. of course, the game isn’t optimized for high-end multicore machines–it always seems to struggle to run smooth on machines with only dual core processors. thankfully, a few patches have managed to dial down the graphical slowness and make multi-core platforms feel right at home, though warband’s persistent world is still a bit sluggish at times, as it should be. (though if you want to bring back some of that sluggishness, you can save your characters automatically and delete them and the stats they had when you quit from the game client. this is a really handy option if your computer runs slower than a constipated ant.)
