a japanese giant of a man (tsuyoshi ihara) is killed by an arrow to the throat. the resulting spell creates a giant monster to fill in for the recently dead guy, and convinces a farmer (played by tony hale) to place himself between the giant and any unsuspecting travelers. at this point in the story, ewan mcgregor as jack has begun to read green mansions by j.r.r tolkien and falls immediately in love with the world of fantasy, so he and his companion who has been raised in that world, merry (domhnall gleeson) decide that the giant must be killed, something that should be fun to do. jack acquires a scale mail shirt as a token of his dedication to fighting evil, and the pair set off on their adventures. along the way, there are battles with troll-like creatures and troops of medieval soldiers, and usually jack gets his hand chopped off. the idea that the giant can instantly grow back a hand is not well-trod, and so jack becomes a skillful hand-carrier and sword wielder, although not a particularly effective or caring friend.
