Why isn’t my countdown timer working?
I’m creating a countdown timer which I want to show on a website. It has only one field – the time left until the countdown starts.
This is the JS in question:
function countdown(){
var today = new Date(),
seconds = today.getTime() – new Date(‘January 01, 1970 00:00:00’).getTime(),
remainder = seconds;
document.getElementById(“timer”).innerHTML =
remainder / 1000;
setTimeout(“countdown()”, 1000);
}
And here’s the HTML which renders it:
00000000
The seconds field does work, in that it shows the difference between the current time and the time set in the timer field, but the field doesn’t count down. All it says is “00” every second.
It seems that setTimeout and countdown() don’t work together. If I change the JS to this:
function countdown(){
var today = new Date(),
seconds = today.getTime() – new Date(‘January 01, 1970 00:00:00’).getTime();
document.getElementById(“timer”).innerHTML =
seconds / 1000;
setTimeout(“countdown()”, 1000);
}
It does work, but it stops counting once “00” is displayed in the field.
