then, in one of those meetings of serendipity that the internet has spawned, i came across rogosins book and, later, the images in the film, and was struck by the fact that the opening of the book was actually a screen grab from a newsreel of a letter rogosins received about his work. it was a revelation. the style of the letter is from the 1950s, but with its intimations of a future in which the world had changed. and the world of 1955 was very different from that of today. you cannot imagine, or, if you can, you will not want to, the world that the bowery of the 1950s was. but this film shows you. it shows the men and women of the bowery and the world around them. these images are strong. they are beautiful. they are sad. they are real.
the images captured by bagley are sometimes grainy, but they are also tough and authentic. the film itself is often black and white, but in the interest of period authenticity, has been carefully colorized. there are probably more than a thousand images in the book. it shows the tattooing scene in the bowery in the 1920s and 1930s, when the black eye barbershop was the premier outlet. the tattooists work with a stencil that they cut from an original screen print of a tattoo motif that they have chosen. the book reproduces these stencils in great detail. unlike most of the other tattooing books of the time, it gives a sense of the technique and the style of work in the shop. it also takes a look at the customers. they are mostly working class men, but also some women, and they were black, white, and asian. the images show the influence of the modernist, neoclassic styles of the time and the influence of the hollywood cinema. there are also some beautiful works done in the american gothic style, including the infamous trademark of frank frazetta, the face of the black panther, on a former mobster.

between these pages are images of the original acetate rubbings from charlie wagner’s turn of the 20th century tattoo shop, the black eye barbershop, in the bowery at chatham square in new york. this is the only known art that has survived from this shop, where samuel j o’reilley’s modern-day electric tattoo machine was born and patented. the imagery of this classic flash preserves the origins of american tattoos, when tattoo art was transferred to the client from these templates via an acetate stencil. everything was done by hand until o’reilley’s electrified tattoo machine changed history. this rich heritage of folk art has more than 900 individual pieces of flash that provide commentary on the shop’s clientele and reveal some of the social, economic, and political ideas of the time. including nautical themes, asian imagery, flowers, boxers, circus characters, and plenty of girls, this is an exciting collection of early american flash and a necessary book for the tattoo artist, aficionado, and student.
