To boot from the Ubuntu Live CD/USB, you’ll need to take one or more of the following steps:

1. Insert a bootable CD/DVD into your computer’s disc drive.
2. Insert a USB flash drive into your computer’s USB port, and then boot your computer from it.
3. Burn the Ubuntu Live CD/USB to a CD or DVD and boot from it.
4. Install Ubuntu to your computer’s hard drive and then boot from the Live CD/USB.

If you get errors in the booting process, check the BIOS settings to ensure that the system is set to boot from the bootable media you’ve loaded onto the USB drive. If you’re trying to boot from a Windows-based DVD, verify that the system is set to boot from that disc before you load it.

The installer will boot the system from your USB flash drive (unless you selected Diskette during the USB Startup Disk Creator wizard, or you have an older Mac that doesn’t support booting from USB) and then display the Install Ubuntu menu. For my system, I selected Rescue a broken system to bring up a Dashboard-type screen.

So, to recap on the difference between the live USB images the casper based system builds upon, here’s my personal list. If you don’t see yours listed here, it’s because you chose No options selected.

I clicked the Install Windows button and after 3 minutes of waiting, I get to the installation screen. I set the language to English, clicked next, and then I get a message with the use of the system disc and the product key of the system disc.

If you want to customize how the live system boot (and maybe do it at the same time as pressing the one key), you have to edit the configuration file at /casper/vmlinuz. The file is /casper/vmlinuz.desktop. Put a line like this at the end of the file:

However in attempting to boot from the usb I find myself blocked. I click F2 on the load and it shows only one boot option, windows on the hard drive. I am using a Dell Inspiron. So I click on the reset options button and up pops a nice list of options with USB first. So I click on USB, enter the three lines of information including a reference to the live Ubunta USB flash drive I intend to use, and up pops a single line containing the USB directive at the end of the line, but at the beginning is the hard drive again. They are together as single choice. Clicking on F12 during startup shows a boot list with only one option, the hard drive. So I am guessing that whatever file contains the boot options has been maliciously altered. I have been researching the above and must say the situation is complex.
You may choose to create an “USB stick drive” if you want to be able to boot off the stick from Windows. If you choose to create this stick, make sure you use the Casper-rw partition type, otherwise you cannot boot off of it. On the next step, choose an install path and select the location of your files.
If you chose the second option and chose to install to the USB stick that you prepared earlier then it will work and install ubuntu to the stick as before. It will prompt you at the end to remove the USB stick. You might want to make a copy of this casper image first before using it. Or don’t, just wipe the stick once you’re finished and put it in to a machine with Windows on it (if it’s a 32 bit machine) and repeat the process from the beginning.
