For images that are not scanned from a physical copy, I generally use Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill feature to eliminate dust and ensure that there are no areas that aren’t filled. This is particularly important with older publications, where the printing may have been done in a more dusty environment than today. The dust and other particles become a distinct obnoxious, black speck in an otherwise clear area, which cannot be quite eliminated reliably with guesses. The Content-Aware Fill feature performed well, even for CC areas of a magazine. Photos that have been scanned are emailed to myself, where I make corrections if necessary. This is done by first using the Photomerge feature to combine multiple scans into a master file. The master file is then opened in Photoshop, and areas of the magazine that are too dark to use are edited. The process is completed by using whatever edits are necessary to bring the area back to a usable state.
