because the subjects were told to ignore any external time-relevant cues, it was predicted that the overweight subjects would also be less accurate than the normal weight subjects when judging the passage of time on the basis of cues that were not time related. to test this prediction, a second study was conducted in which subjects were asked to estimate the passage of time in two different situations. in one situation, the passage of time was marked by interesting cues, while in the other situation, the passage of time was marked by boring cues. if the overweight subjects lacked the ability to sense time-relevant cues and were therefore unaware of the passage of time, it was predicted that they would show similar levels of inaccuracy in the time-marked situations as they did in the no time-relevant cue situations. we found that the overweight subjects were significantly more inaccurate than the normal weight subjects in the time-marked situations, but not in the no time-relevant cue situations. that is, in the time-relevant cue situations, the overweight subjects were no more inaccurate than the normal weight subjects; however, in the boring cue situations, they were significantly more inaccurate than the normal weight subjects. we conclude that the overweight subjects have reduced sensitivity to time-relevant cues, and therefore have difficulty accurately perceiving the passage of time. it is also evident that overweight subjects have difficulty perceiving the passage of time in a situation where the passage of time is not clearly marked.
