The baseband signal is now ready to be decoded into the equivalent audio signal. We use the LGSP class for this, but there is room for improvement. One area that is not handled efficiently by the LGSP class is that the decoding process needs to be done in sync with the input stream (the audio bitstream.) It would be nice if there was a way to tell the Decoder class that we are decoding the bitstream and can do it in lockstep with the data being read. The code below takes care of this by a (mostly) ad-hoc hack that expects the data to be read in 1-bit chunks. At the end of each chunk, we add one extra sample to the last frame. (The decode process may need to add some more samples at the beginning of each chunk as well as during the decoding process. We assume this is ok and will work out the details as the need arises.) The sync process handles everythiing just right and seems to work.
Fortunately the team behind gnuradio provides a class to make the LGSP decoding process easy. Here’s a link to the documentation on the LGSP class. Note that the code examples are in matlab, but it’s pretty easy to convert them to any language.
The original version was a little buggy and it took me a while to get everything working. You can see the letters and numbers displayed on the decoder. I think they were not always the same for every decode.
