the verses of the various azhwars were compiled by nathamuni (824 – 924 ce), a 10th-century vaishnavite theologian, who called it the dravida veda or tamil veda. the divya prabandham is devoted to the propagation of vaishnavism. the number of verses in each stanza is five, that is, each stanza has five verses. each verse is composed in eight mndakas (units) (64 syllables). the composition is in muktasukta metre.
gurudeva, the maker of this book and acharyas and sathvik gurus paramparai were born in the same month (sravana) and ruled the same year (sakha) and were born at the same place (thirukurugoor) and were born of the same mother (kavya). they are one and the same. [17] the names of the gurus mentioned in the above slokam has the same meaning as the name of that guru.
the sri bhagavan akasha viharam is the guruparamparai of nammazhwar. since his guru is alwars and acharyas and sathvik gurus, this book is acharyarathnam iraivanam meaning the acharya-pathnam of gurus. the words sri bhagavan and bhagavan – his paathnam mean the same thing.
further, this dhivya prabandham is the most acclaimed and revered of all vaishnava and sanskrit literature. the almighty god himself blessed dhivya prabandham with the power to bring pleasure to the pious people. nathamuni narrates that a bunch of flowers fell from srivaishnava’s forehead at his feet. the flowers were covered with drops of water, and the people who picked up the flowers were struck with pleasure. this is the power that dhivya prabandham has. it is a pleasure to read, sing and chant it. this is why the bhagavan himself is glorified as the nayanamoorthy through the words of nammazhwar.
in this dhivya prabandham, there are only two kinds of verses: ahanam and pathu. ahanam is the one that is composed of nouns and noun compounds. pathu is the one that is composed of adjectives, verbs, nominal compounds and nominal compounds. in the first part, the bhagavan is introduced as the one who has compassion for his devotees. he is worthy of praise and glorification, as this dhivya prabandham explains the most profound aspects of his glories. this prabandham also explains in detail the supreme status of bhagavan, his pastimes, his edicts and his blessing. this dhivya prabandham is a great source of pleasure for the pious people.
