One. Casual sex may not be good for you. “With casual sex, you have to accept that you’ll have some shame around sex, or it won’t be as satisfying,” says Michelle Jaffe, a sex psychologist and the author of Tame Your Tongue: Winning the Battle of Sex, Lust, and Self-Control. “You might feel embarrassed the next day, thinking ‘Oh, I did that.’ [It makes] you more stressed out — and most people have sex at least once a week, and that stress is really difficult to deal with.” In short, you’re likely to feel worse about yourself for some time after, which could cause more unfulfilling sex. But, Jaffe adds, “When you feel positive and empowered and not negatively judged, it really adds joy to your sex life.”
Two. Casual sex can be satisfying but it might not be for everyone. “Some people are just very open to casual sex and are fine with casual encounters,” says Kristin Legitere, a sex therapist in Atlanta, Georgia. “We’re just talking about different preferences here. Some people will do anything once; others will only do certain things.”
Three. Casual sex isn’t for everyone. Legitere says one of her patients actually had casual sex on a regular basis for years and eventually wrote a book about it. She told Legitere that his main takeaway from it was that he now knew what he liked, and what he didn’t, in sex — and as the one asking for it, he was able to direct how it should be handled. “What I loved was that he knew how to talk to women and ask for what he wanted,” Legitere says. “It enabled him to direct the way sex should be. He didn’t feel out of control. If you’re serious, you’re serious. If you don’t know what you want, you’ll like what you get — and if you’re in a healthy relationship where communication is good, those things should be easy to communicate.”
Four. It’s possible that casual sex will end up being “bad” for you. If you’re emotionally attached to the person (but not necessarily physically attached), that could be a problem in the long-run. “Sometimes we are emotionally bound, and that means we are not like taking our clothes off to someone we’re sexually attracted to,” Legitere says. “It can make the sex much less satisfying, not because we’re not attracted to someone, but because
