Prevent a user from accessing certain files in a directory on the web server
I have a web server where a customer can upload files. I want to be able to limit a user’s access to certain files. I want to prevent them from accessing any files in the directory that start with a certain string. For example, if a user attempts to access any file in the directory “FileA” I want to throw an error.
As far as I know there are only two ways to do this, but I’m not exactly sure which is more secure:
Option 1: Create a folder within the directory where any file with that prefix must be stored. Then, when a user attempts to access any file in that folder, you can determine the prefix and throw an error.
Option 2: Create an exclusion list that will be stored in a text file in the directory where the files are stored. Then, when a user attempts to access any file in the directory, the list is checked and an error is thrown if the file isn’t included in the list.
Is there another solution that I’m missing?

Option 3: have no directory, just files. This is called “hide and forget”.
Option 4: have “secret” directories and “secret” files. The user is restricted to the normal filesystem, which means anyone trying to access that directory won’t know about the secret stuff. That way, the file you don’t want them to see could be “secret.php”.
Option 5: Have a standard filesystem and, for each file you do want users to access, add something to the filename. A hash of the file’s contents or the file’s last modification time can work. The user has no direct way to directly access the file they’re trying to access.
